Excuse Makers & Action Takers – Which Are You?

I always love hearing from people who’ve decided to join the Family Rocketship in one way or another.

But with the messages and emails I’ve received, I’ve noticed that people fall into one of two different groups.

The first group is made up of the doers. These are the people that are making their ideal lifestyle happen. They’re the ones that show me their goals and even how they made the first steps into their new freedom lifestyle.

The second group is made up of the people who are NOT making it happen. They use all different kinds of tactics.

Some ask a lot of questions. Some spend too much time studying something. Some spend too much time on social media “making connections”.

Almost all of them make excuses in one way or another. They include:

  • “I’m too busy…”
  • “I’m a single parent…”
  • “I’m too old to get started…”
  • “I don’t have enough experience…”
  • “I’ve never had my own business before…”
  • “I don’t have enough money to start a business…”
  • “I didn’t go to school for this…”
  • “Isn’t the market saturated?”
  • “The government is preventing me from…”
  • “I live in a small town and know everyone already…”
  • “I live in a big city and can’t meet anyone…”
  • And about a million other excuses…

Some excuses are just dumb. Others are pretty smart. People have become really skilled at convincing themselves that they just can’t do it.

But an excuse, no matter how well crafted, is still an excuse. There’s no such thing as a good excuse.

“You can make excuses or make money.”

-Mark Cuban, Billionaire

Here’s the bottom line, if your excuse it talking you out of creating a better lifestyle for yourself, then it’s garbage. Complete utter rubbish.

There’s Never a Good Reason For Not Making Your Life Better

With what I’ve already mentioned, what group do you fall into?

Are you a doer and are actively working on making your life better?

Or are you making excuses?

If you’re making it happen, congratulations! I hope you and I can meet up sometime. If you come here to Cozumel, I’ll take you out for tacos!

“We are all self-made but only the successful will admit it.”

-Earl Nightingale

If you’re making excuses, well amigo, just stop! I can’t really say it in a nicer way. I wish I could! Just stop with the freaking excuses and get to work!

Excuses Are Based On Fear

To get over the habit of making excuses, you have to understand that they all stem from fear.

Like I said, some people make really great sounding reasons for not taking action. But it doesn’t matter. It’s all based on fear.

You’ve got to switch that attitude and start to operate from a more positive place.

You’ve also got to recognize that nobody else is going to care about your life more than you. OK, maybe your mom does. 🙂  BUT, you can’t expect your mom to do everything for you!

It’s up to you and only you to take control of your life. If you accept this simple fact, your life will change for the better.

Besides, what’s the alternative?

Work at a job you despise, pay bills, and do that year and year until you die? What a waste!

Give Me Any Excuse and I’ll Debunk It

I’m not kidding. Send me your best excuse and I bet you I can squash it!

If Nick Vujicic can become a successful dude with literally no legs and no arms, you can too. I mean seriously!

Heck, one of my buddies is missing one eye entirely and has glaucoma in the other. He’s legally blind and has to use speech to text on his computer just to work. That said, he makes over $20K a month with his online leads business.

Chances are pretty good, if you have the ability to read this blog post, you can do whatever you want to with your life.

If your work schedule is really that full, then quit! Get another less stressful job so you can have time to start your own business.

If your school schedule is really too busy, then dial down your classes and get moving before and after school.

If your family responsibilities are too much, then learn to systematize everything. Get a set bedtime for the kids. Do chores on Monday. Do groceries on Tuesday. Then spend the rest of the week hustling on your ideal lifestyle.

I mean think about it, if you throw me any excuse about how bad you’ve got it, that’s all the more reason to change your life!

Your Actions Reflect Your Beliefs

If you think about it, everything you do is only a reflection of what you believe.

If you believe that life is hard, it will be. If you believe that having a job is the only way to make money, then that’s what you’ll do. If you believe that you’ll never be able to see and do cool stuff, then you’ll have a boring treadmill of a life.

On the flipside, if you believe that life is meant to be enjoyed, and fun, and fulfilling, then you’ll find ways to make it happen.

It’s how my wife and I operate. It’s what we teach our kids. It’s what we share with our friends. It’s what I preach here on Family Rocketship.

You have to think about your top priorities. What do you really want? Do you want to just commute to a job every day for 40 years and then die? Sounds pretty sucky to me.

Yet people do it. And they make excuses as to why they can’t do anything else. And even worse, they try to tear down anyone else doing anything different from them.

It’s up to you and only you to take control of your life. If you accept this simple fact, your life will change for the better.

Like I said before, there’s never a good excuse for NOT living your ideal lifestyle. You either man or woman-up and make it happen, or you live an average, miserable, unfulfilled life.

About now you might be thinking, “Sheesh! This guy is really laying it on thick!” And you’re right!

I’m trying to motivate you to get into the cool club of people having fun everyday! I’m trying to get you to feel just a touch guilty about not doing more to make your own life great. I want you to take action towards doing and seeing everything you’ve always wanted to.

There are other people doing it. Why not you?

Now, let me give you a few suggestions on how to actually make it all happen…

7 Simple Suggestions to Live Your Ideal Lifestyle

Walt Disney#1 – Ditch the Excuses

You just have to. No more excuses. Just don’t. Decide right now that instead of saying no to something, you’ll say yes. Then get busy figuring out how you can.

#2 – Get Clear On What You Really Want

This is also known as creating a vision. Picture whatever it is you want. Make a vision board. Put it on a post-it note. Write it on your mirror. Jot it down in your journal.

Whatever it is that you really want, make it really clear in your mind.

#3 – Set a Goal

This one sounds pretty obvious but most people don’t actually do it.

To make it a good goal, make it just big enough to challenge you but small enough to actually attain.

And be sure to write it down and post it where you can see it.

#4 – Baby Steps

Break down your goal into daily action steps. If you like, you can make them weekly.

Do not make them any bigger than that though (like bi-weekly or monthly). It will be too easy to postpone them.

#5 – Get an Accountability Partner

This can be your spouse or significant other. Or maybe it’s a friend or someone else you know.

The key is that you have to respect this person. Basically, you don’t want to let this person down. It makes it more motivational!

In my own case, it’s my wife. Even though we’ve been married for almost 13 years, I’m still trying to impress her.

But I also have an insurance policy – I have a business associate and friend who I meet with weekly. We keep each other accountable and moving forward in our respective businesses.

#6 – Take Daily Action

Actually DO the steps you listed in #4. This is the most important part! The dream lifestyle comes from doing something – from making it happen!

For me, I work from a daily to-do list. It’s old-school. I literally use a monthly calendar with daily to-do’s. Then I cross them off as I go.

#7 – Measure and Adjust

On a periodic basis, you want to look back at the progress you’ve made. What action items have you crossed off your list? What do you still have left to do?

How often you do this is up to you. Personally, I like to do this weekly. Sunday nights for me are a good time to look at what I’ve done. I also use it to get excited for the coming week and what I get to do.

Whenever you hit a big milestone, be sure to reward yourself appropriately! Go out for ice cream or tacos or whatever!

Just Do It!

Nike had it right. Just make it happen. Get rid of any thoughts or beliefs that you can’t do whatever you want. It’s not true!

Decide now that you’re going to make your life awesome. Decide that you’ll finally be proud of what you do and who you are. Decide that you’ll finally live the life you’re supposed to be living.
