You Can Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

Lifestyle Design: You Can Have Your Cake and Eat It Too

Recently I saw a great post by Sean Ogle which lays out how to set up a lifestyle business.

I think it’s something everyone should definitely consider at least once during their lives.

However, in the comments there was one guy that kind of rubbed me the wrong way. He alluded to the fact that he feels the whole “lifestyle design thing” doesn’t really work.

He stressed that his business started to fall apart when he took a 3 week vacation. And he thinks that it’s really only for young single guys but not anyone else.

Well, that mentality drives me a little batsy.

Because it’s pretty much the opposite of what I’m preaching here at Family Rocketship! Lifestyle design IS for families too!

How do I know that? I’m living proof!

If this is your first time here, I live here in Cozumel, Mexico with my wife and 3 kids. The majority of our funding comes through our business Social Rocketship. We love being here and plan on being here a while before taking off to the next awesome location.

You can learn more here.

So it’s real.

But how to do it?

The guy has a few genuine concerns. He wants to know how he can travel and still build his business. Ok, let’s talk about that.

But first, we gotta get down to basics.

Make the Right Goals

First, everything that you’re going to do in life is decided by you or by someone else. It might as well be you. And you might as well choose to do awesome stuff.

You’ve got to make the right goals and then actually work towards them. It’s best to make goals based on your priorities and values.

For example, one of our highest values is fun. So we thought, “Let’s move to somewhere that’s really fun!”

Another big-time value for us is mobility. We want to be able to go wherever we want whenever we want.

We set our goals based on our priorities and values. Cozumel fit the bill perfectly. That’s why we’re here.

It’s important to make your goals and then work your tail off to achieve them. In most cases, you’re going to need money to achieve your dream lifestyle.

That leads to…

Set up a Business to Make Money

This one seems a little obvious. To live your dream lifestyle you need to be able to fund it.

There are about a 10,000 ways to do this. To be brief, the main options boil down to working remote with a job, working on location (in your dream location), freelancing, or starting a business.

Of those options, we’ve found that setting up a real business is the best way. That business could be providing a service or selling a product. Service-based businesses are often the easiest and quickest to get going.

But the most important step here is to think of how you could start to make money today that will lead to you achieving your goals tomorrow.

You have to be dedicated. You have to work the business hard and fast. But that’s not all. You also have to…

Structure Your Business Correctly

To go back to our friend that thinks a business will fall apart after a 3 week vacation…

Maybe in his case, it did. Why? Because he obviously didn’t set it up the right way.

Setting up a lifestyle business that provides true freedom allows you to be gone 3 weeks or 3 years! It doesn’t matter.

You first need to set up your business in a way that you can get on top of it as quickly as possible. Easier said than done I know – especially with a service-based business.

However, this should be the goal. Set up a system. Get the work done by a team (you shouldn’t be doing this yourself – trust me, personal experience).

Sell. Sell. Sell.

And sell some more. As the business owner, your number one priority is revenue – that’s not me talking. That’s billionaire Mark Cuban.

Sell. Sell. Sell.

Then, once the system is going, outsource your sales. Set up a great commission program. Work with an outside sales company.

Also, just plain kick butt for your customers or clients so they refer you out to other people!

Client communication is important. You need to be able to talk to your customers every now and then. Especially if your business is service-based.

You can use tools like Skype or Google voice. Or, even better, you can have a manager who does this for you. You can then truly be on top of your business.

Then, you’re free for the next step which is to scale up. Make more sales (or make sure more sales are happening from your team), get more clients, exceed their expectations through amazing work, and then repeat.

Once you get the machine going, you can pretty much do whatever you want. And this leads to being able to…

Take off (or Sit at Home in Your Underwear)

Going back to our friend for just a minute – he continued that he won’t be taking off on any long term travel until he makes his first million.

Well, my friend, that’s fine if that’s what you want. To me, that’s living the “deferred life plan” as they say.

For me, I’m just not that patient. Plus, because I’m mortal and knowing my spleen could rupture at any time (or whatever) only increases my desire to make each day count.

Lifestyle design is waking up every day loving what you get to do that day.

It can include work. It can include fun. It can (and should) involve time with family and friends. It means living every day as if it were your last and rocking it!

I’m not just getting preachy here either! I’m living this!

If you want to take off and see the world, awesome. If you want to volunteer more, awesome. Even if you want to sit at home and play video games, awesome.

It doesn’t matter so long as you’re the one actively choosing to do so. You’ve bought your freedom through your hard work, do what you want.

Just Freaken Do It

I’m only preaching this stuff because I’ve done it all personally. By their fruits, ye shall know them.

I get to live on a tropical island eating every meal with my kids and go scuba diving whenever I want. It took me a while to get here. But I did.

Now it’s my goal to serve as a help to anyone else who wants to do the same.

As I always say, if I can, you can too! I’m nobody special. I just happen to take my life and my daily actions very seriously.

In other words, I’m dead serious about having lots of fun.

What do you want to do? What are you willing to do today to make that happen?
