Why You Don’t Have Enough Money & How to Fix It, Guaranteed!

Here’s a bold statement for you: if you can read this blog post all the way through to the end, you can escape the 9-5 and yes, even get rich. Yeah, it sounds scammy but I promise I’ll back it up.

If you don’t know me, you might think the rest of this post sounds a bit snotty, even arrogant. I promise I’m neither.

But I am writing from a place of pleading. I’m begging you to listen to this message.

Why? Because I get emails on a daily basis now from people who found my blog because they were searching for an “escape the 9-5” or “how to start a business” or an “alternative to jobs” or whatever.

In fact, when people sign up on my email list, I ask them straight up why they joined my list. Here are just a few responses:

The reason I joined your mailing list is pretty typical, I’ve hated pretty much every job I’ve had and I can’t believe I have been able to get myself to go to work consistently for so long.

I came across your website after searching for alternative family lifestyles on google. I’m looking for a way to earn a living and spend as much time with my child as possible.

I want to build a business that can replace the income from my current job that I can’t stand. I also want to be able to create a flow of semi-passive income that I can rely on.

A lifeline to a better life.

Family Rocketship is my attempt to help people get a “lifeline to a better life” and this post is something I’ve wanted to write for a while.

There are a ton of reasons why people don’t have as much money as they want to. For you, it might be because you:

  • Haven’t learned or researched what’s needed
  • Are too lazy – you haven’t put in the effort
  • Are too scared
  • Started something once but failed
  • Are afraid of success
  • Don’t believe you can
  • Think making money on your own is a scam
  • Are too comfortable with the average or “good enough” life

In most of the cases I’ve seen, the common root cause is fear. In fact, it seems that people live in one of two places; one is faith and the other is fear.

You either believe you can make something better happen and actively work towards it. Or you believe that you can’t and seek reasons to justify that.

Successful people live in a state of faith. Unsuccessful people don’t.

It’s insane to me to see the huge amounts of people wasting time complaining about politicians. It’s insane to see lines of taxi drivers all waiting for their next fare (and complaining how Uber is stealing their business). It’s insane to see people cutting out coupons and fighting with crowds all to save $2.

Why not focus instead on creating your own wealth? Take the time you waste complaining, or sitting waiting for work, or cutting coupons and trade it in for improving your own situation?

But back to you personally. Are you going to let fear or faith run your life? It’s your choice.

Doers and Do Nots, Family Rocketship

All the information is out there. There are even people like me who literally list out how to start a business step-by-step.

It’s up to you what to actually DO with it. With all of the knowledge on the internet, there’s just absolutely no reason why anybody can complain about not having enough money.

The simple fact is this, it’s no longer a world where people are divided into haves and have-not’s. It’s now a world of the doers and the do-not’s.

With the knowledge that we have now, if you don’t have as much money as you’d like, it’s because you’re dumb, lazy, or probably afraid. I can come to no other conclusion.

“Ouch! That’s super mean!” you say.

“Well, I hope I’ve gotten under your skin just a little bit,” I say.

Why? Because agitation creates change. And change leads to progress. And progress in your life means having more money and getting to live a fantastic lifestyle.

And because I don’t like to dwell on the problem long, I now proudly present the solution….

Yes, the whole how-you-can-make-money thing.ALTERNATIVE TO JOBS

I’m going to share now how you can take control of your life, start your own business, and make more money.

Plain and simple.

Not too long ago, I was having lunch with a friend of mine named Benjamin here in Cozumel. Benjamin wants to start his own business to pull his family out of poverty. He has the drive but he lacks the know-how.

I asked him, “Take this restaurant for example. Somebody built it, runs it and makes money from it. Do you know how to start a restaurant?”

He shook his head no.

Then I said, “Neither do I. But check this out.”

I took out my iPhone and googled, “how to start a restaurant”. Then I showed him pages and pages of really good resources on how to literally start a restaurant from scratch.

His eyes got big and I almost watched his head explode right in front of me. It was like he’d never thought of simply googling something before.

Then he smiled. And I saw the first sparks of hope fire up in his eyes. And that’s where the magic begins!

You have to understand and accept that all of the information you need is already out there.

All you have to do is google it. Or YouTube it. Or go to forums. Or Facebook groups. Or LinkedIn groups. Or… yeah, you get my point.

In fact, it’s more or less how I started my own business. I had some experience but I didn’t know everything. I didn’t have any “unfair advantage”. I had access to Google – the same as anyone else!

If you can type and can read (or even just watch videos), you can start your own business and make money and improve your life.

“One hour per day of study will put you at the top of your field within three years. Within five years you’ll be a national authority. In seven years, you can be one of the best people in the world at what you do.”
-Earl Nightingale

In fact, here’s something that’s totally unrelated to making money but completely relevant to what I’m talking about.

Before we returned to Cozumel, my family went to Disneyland a lot – two or three times a week in fact.

There’s a ride there called Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters. On the ride, you take a laser gun and shoot aliens to get as high of a score as you can.

For the longest time, I could never pass the second level. It drove me nuts! Instead of actually having fun on the ride and playing with my kids, I was obsessed with getting a high score.

Then one day, while standing in a very long line, I had the bright idea to practice what I preach and google it. I came across a few articles like this one and it changed my life!

Take a look! I went from a consistent Level 2 Space Ace to a Level 5 Ranger First Class!

Buzz Lightyear Ride Improved Scores

I know. Super cheesy example right?!

BUT, it illustrates PERFECTLY what I’m talking about. I couldn’t do something before. I looked it up online. I applied it to the real world. I did it and it made my life that much better.

If you don’t know it, learn it. Then apply it in real life. It’s as simple as that!

Start your own business, even on the side, and then start having the money you want.

In fact, the secret to your own success breaks down like this:

  1. Desire – you’ve got to first want it
  2. Values – you’ve got to identify what you really want (not just what society or your parents or neighbors think – what will make YOU really happy)
  3. Vision – you’ve got to see your desired lifestyle in your mind
  4. Goals – with your vision in mind, put some tangible metrics in place to make them happen
  5. Action – get busy working towards your goals through effective action
  6. Commitment – you’ve got to have the discipline to stick with it & to get up early, stay up late, give up TV, or whatever – just do it!

Of course, this is all stuff that I teach in my 60-Day Entrepreneur course. If you’ve never started a business before, I go into exact detail how to do it in step-by-step program.

I’m not a prophet. I’m not a super savvy Wall Street investor. I’m not an economist.

CREATE THE FUTUREBut, I do know that big changes are coming. Big sucky changes for people that only depend on a job for their main source of money.

Starting your own business and being in charge of your own income is just plain smart. Governments, unions, politicians, etc are just not going to care about you and your family more than you are.

That’s just a simple fact.

If you really care about your family’s financial well-being and overall happiness, then you’ve got to do something.

Your future happiness will depend on your present willingness to hustle.

You don’t need millions and millions of dollars. You don’t need a bank loan. You don’t need investors.

You can get started right now with what you’ve got. Start working hard. Start making money and scale that into whatever size business you want for you and your family.

And the good news? There’s never been a better time in history to make it happen! It’s unprecedented!

It’s how a teenager with a smartphone can have millions of YouTube followers. It’s how a soccer mom with a busy schedule can have a cooking blog and make $20k/mo. It’s how a guy who gets let go from a job can start his own business and move to a tropical island with his family….

Now, if you’ve stuck with me to the end of this post, congratulations! You might have what it takes to actually make it.

Because first, you had the desire. Then you took action (you read). Then you had the commitment to finish the post instead of bouncing off to check social media.

Now, comes more action!

You need to decide right now that you want something better. You need to figure out what your values are and put goals in place to realize them.

Maybe you want to make an extra $50K this year so that you can have more time with your family or pay off a loan or whatever.

Then you need to commit to starting your own side business that will help you make it happen. If you need a head start, I highly recommend the 60-Day Entrepreneur program.

If you’re not sure where to start, just ask in the comments section below!

Just commit that you will change and start now.

In fact, if you want some added accountability, simply post your goal below in the comments so that we can all see them. I promise this Family Rocketship community is a nice one and will be supportive to you.

I wish nothing but the best life for you and your family!

To freedom!

Survival Mode

How to Move Beyond Survival Mode

Sharon wakes up every day at 5 am to the sound of her alarm clock. She hits the snooze button twice before dragging herself to the shower.

She grabs a granola bar, her car keys, and rushes out the door to beat the morning rush.

She gets to her office, logs in to her computer, and looks at her inbox.

After two hours of responding to emails, she takes a break. She looks at her “Island Paradise” calendar and wishes to be laying on the white sands and warm turquoise waters in the photo.

A phone call interrupts her daydreaming. It’s her credit card company wanting money for two months of past due payments.

She opens her check book and looks at the balance. Making the payment is going to wipe out her account and it’s still 11 more days until payday.

Ironically, Sharon has never made more money in her entire life.

Living in Survival Mode

It’s a tragedy that a big majority of people are living in what’s been called survival mode. Let me explain what I think that means.

In my experience, I’ve seen people living in one of two areas or modes of life. The first and most common mode is the survival mode. The other mode is the abundance mode.

I’m sure that just by seeing the names you can already tell the difference.

Identify How You Can Make Money

Identify How You Can Make Money

Before we dive into how to identify how you can create your own lifestyle business, first check out this quote:

“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.”

Simple truth: to live your ideal lifestyle, you’re going to have to work. And work hard. And work smart.

I hope that’s not a shocker.

Now we’re going to talk about creating your own business. These days, it’s never been easier to set up a business and get moving quickly.

A Lifestyle Business Based on Your Strengths

You’ve got to first identify your strengths, natural abilities, interests, and even job experience. To get things moving quickly, we’re going to create a business around what you already know.

One way to think of it is if you were to be dropped off in another city with nothing but the clothes on your back, what would you do to start making money? (And no, you can’t beg for money or get a job!)

First, list out your skills, experience, and interests. Write them all out.

Now look at everything you’ve written. Zero in on one that you think would be most profitable.

This is crucial. Read more

Why Your Family Wants You To Quit Your Job

Why Your Family Wants You To Quit Your Job

First things first. Every now and then, we need to center ourselves and think about what’s really the most important to us.

What’s most important to you?

Saying Family RocketshipAs the saying goes, “when you’re lying on your deathbed, you’re not going to wish you’d just spent more time at the office.”

I’m willing to bet that family will be the most important thing to you.

In fact, family is kind of the whole point of it all.

So in today’s busy world, how can you build your life around your family?

It seems many people are caught working so hard to make ends meet that they spend their best waking hours away from their families.

In fact, most people only spend nights and weekends with their loved ones and maybe a tiny vacation once a year.

When you think about what’s truly most important to you, you see how backwards that is.

There’s a better way. You can build a family-centered life.

But what about money?

Lifestyle Design for Families

How Important is Lifestyle Design to You?

What is lifestyle design and why should it be important to you? So let’s first ask the obvious question, what is lifestyle design?

Here’s an analogy that might help…

Think back to high school. Imagine the crummy cafeteria food that you stand in long lines for everyday. You get your food just in time to eat it and then head back to class.

Then one day one of your friends decides that she is fed up with old pizza and tasteless burgers and decides to drive over to the health food store just a block from the school. She comes back from lunch and seems energized by her new found freedom in choice of food.

The next day, your friend spends her morning telling people to join her and go out in search of a quality lunch. Some people say they don’t have the time – they’ll never make it back before class starts again. Others say they don’t have enough money to afford anything but cafeteria food. Still others say they shouldn’t do it because the principal will get mad.

But your friend doesn’t give up and she comes to you. She persuades you to join her. After a very satisfying meal, you realize that this is what you had been looking for the whole time but you just didn’t know it.

Then it dawns on you that your new delicious meal cost less than the day old, crusty burrito you were so used to eating and it was much more nutritious. You had plenty of time and enjoyed a meaningful discussion with your friend. You even had the opportunity to share some of your food with a person in need. You came back to school with a new sense of purpose. It’s amazing what rethinking your lunch does for you.

Ok, so maybe this illustration is a bit silly but I hope it helps you to understand that lifestyle design is to start thinking in an “unconventional way”. Lifestyle design is thinking outside the box – a phrase that is, ironically, so highly valued but so underutilized.

According to Wikipedia, lifestyle design is,

“The design of one’s ideal lifestyle, especially an unconventional one, providing good opportunities for personal growth, leisure and adventure. Detailed methods include: career planning, entrepreneurship and travel.”

It starts by answering this question:

What do you really want to trade the minutes of your life for, with whom, where, and how? Check out this quote from Shirley MacLaine:

“I think of life itself now as a wonderful play that I’ve written for myself and so my purpose is to have the utmost fun playing my part.”

If you skim this entire post, hopefully that last quote really sinks into your soul and moves you until you finally decide to do something about it.

Lifestyle design starts with personal development

By personal development I mean taking the time to think about and realize what you really want to do with your life. Then push through any obstacles that will be placed in your way. Then achieve what you feel like you were born to do.

Easier said than done I know. You could think of it as identifying your highest values and then taking action on those values.

Figuring out your highest values is sometimes difficult. Often what we think is so important to us goes out the window when faced with a life-threatening situation.

But it doesn’t require something as serious as that to get clear on your values. Just answer the age-old question, if time and money weren’t an issue, what would you spend your days doing?

For those of you embedded in the 9-5 lifestyle, you’re going to scoff at this question and dismiss it as ridiculous and unrealistic. That’s fine. This message isn’t for you. This message is for people willing to take back what’s really important. By answering the above question, you’ll discover not only what you really want to do, but what your highest values really are.

Once you start down the path of personal development, it will quickly lead to a desire to help others. In most cases, the secret to helping yourself to a better life is through helping others to their better life. So you will inevitably become a social change agent. That sounds like a grand title to what is really as simple as sharing a compliment, offering a hug, or teaching someone how to read.

“Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile”

Albert Einstein

The Four Pillars of Lifestyle Design

Time Freedom

Time is the first and most obvious thing we all seek. Entire books have been written about how to manage time better. The most important concept to learn in regards to time is to decide what you’re going to do with it. That’s it!

This is overwhelming for most people because so many of us already have our time mapped out for us before we even get there. After high school, we’ll plan on spending the next 4+ years in college. After college, we’ll plan on spending the next 40+ years at a job with weekends as breaks. Oh yeah, maybe there’s a few vacations thrown in there.

This is the current system. It’s kind of like trying to pay back a debt. Your money is already spoken for before you even get it! People are doing the same thing with time. They’re giving it away before they even get it. Lifestyle design addresses the issue of time by reclaiming it. You decide what you’re doing with it.

Financial Freedom

Ah, money. This is a good one! So many of us are spending our time in exchange for money. That’s not a bad thing. We all need money. We need food, shelter, clothing, and a little bit extra to do the things we want to do.

How much money is enough? Well, that’s up to you to decide. Having a lot of money is a very good thing. Don’t agree? Check your fun level when you don’t have any money. Nope. Not fun.

The big factor here is that people think having lots of money means having lots of stuff. Stuff does not bring happiness. It doesn’t! I have never owned so few things in my entire life as I do right now and I’m happier than I’ve ever been!

Just like time, what you decide to do with your money is entirely up to you. My personal experience tells me that “buying experiences” over stuff brings much more happiness. We would rather do things than have things. We’ve also found that anonymously giving our money away brings amazing blessings.

Money is good. You need it to learn, travel, share, and help others. How much you need is up to you and your situation. This is worthy of an entire series of posts. Simply put, decide on a way that enables you to make “enough” to do the things you want to do and then some and share as much as you can in meaningful ways.

In my opinion, having a job is not the ideal situation for money generation unless you’re doing exactly what you want to do and it gives you the total freedom to decide how you will live each day. Keep this in mind as it closely relates to the next pillar of lifestyle design which is…

Mobility is the ability to be free to go where you want to go whenever you want. This could include travel if that’s one of your values. I have a personal bias towards travel because I’ve learned so much by seeing different places and meeting different people. Just like money, the topic of travel is worthy of an entire series of posts. Bottom line, travel is good. But you probably already know this.

Thanks to a high tech world and the mighty internet, it’s now possible to combine making money with being out and about. This could even include making money from a job while not at the job place. 10 years ago, working “remote” was weird. Now it’s becoming the norm. Thank goodness!

Time, money, and mobility all lead to the next and most important of the pillars of lifestyle design…

Freedom of Choice

Once you arrive at having the time and money you need and want, how will you fill your time? Will you dedicate yourself to a cause? Will you travel, learn, and explore with your family? Will you start a new school teaching what you’ve learned?

The choice is now yours because you have designed your life in alignment with your highest values.

The painful thing is that most people are sacrificing their freedom of choice now in the hopes of some potential payoff later. “If I just put in 30 years at the firm now, then I’ll have a sweet retirement…”, “If I just go to one more meeting, then I’ll be made VP and have more time”, and so on.

(Getting preachy alert)

Freedom of choice is probably the most cherished of virtues but the least acted upon. It carries a steep price – it must be acted upon now. Every minute of every day you have the complete and total choice to decide what’s most important to you and how you’re going to spend your time.

You are in charge of you. Not the government. Not your parents. Not your boss. You. You decide what your life is going to look like. You decide how you’re going to spend your time. You decide what adventures and experiences you’re going to have.

Lifestyle design is much more than a trendy topic for bloggers. It’s the method we should all be incorporating into our lives. It’s how we find meaning. It’s how we help ourselves. It’s how we help others. It’s how life is made beautiful. Life is meant to be enjoyed, not just tolerated.

Let me just finish with something I always like to say. Life can be awesome or it can be a gray cubicle bore of a life. You might as well make it awesome!

So, how important is lifestyle design to you? What will you do today to design your dream life and take action towards it?

The Wyland Principle

The Wyland Principle

Just before Heidi and I were married, I worked for the marine life artist Wyland. He’s most well known for his huge murals of whales, dolphins, and other sea life on the sides of huge buildings throughout the country. In addition to “tagging” buildings, he’s also an amazing sculptor and works with oils and brush art.

Working for Wyland was an awesome experience. It was fascinating going to the art shows in his galleries in Laguna Beach, La Jolla, and San Diego.

My job at those shows was to assist him by laying out the paints, brushes, and canvases for him to paint with. If he needed something, I was the little gopher that would bring it to him.

At these shows, one of his favorite activities was to paint Chinese brush arts in front of an eager crowd all trying to watch the artist work. He would then auction the painting off right then and there.

Some eager bidder would usually pay around $4000 on the spot. My job was to record their name and then take their new painting to a safe spot where it could dry.

Before I could even finish doing that, Wyland was already busy on working on his next painting.

He would repeat this process about 4 or 5 times or until he felt the crowd was starting to dry up. It was absolutely nuts to me that I could watch this artist in action make about $20,000 – $30,000 on the spot within a period of about 30 minutes!

Not a bad gig huh?

I learned a lot of things through the whole experience. For starters, I learned that in order to live your passion, you need to be willing to go for it. Wyland always related the story about how he had 3 jobs in two days and that was it. He was meant to be an artist and he knew it. So he went for it.

Another thing I learned is that Wyland knows business. This is why most artists starve – they can’t sell their stuff! Wyland is a business man through and through. He loves profit and he loves making money. When I was working with him he had homes in Laguna Beach, North Shore, and Key Largo. Not too shabby for a guy that paints dolphins!

The biggest lesson I took away from my experience with Wyland is what I’ve termed “The Wyland Principle”. Before explaining the principle, let me give you some background.

Some of Wyland’s critics have tried to degrade his work by saying he sold out. Because he’s licensed his art to calendars, tote bags, and key chains, he can’t be a true artist. After all, true art can’t be motivated by money right?

They’ve also criticized his work calling it, “dentist office art”. No serious collector would ever consider buying a piece that you can also see while you’re getting your root canal done.

But here’s how I see it.

He’s making a killing doing what he loves. I don’t know enough about art to tell you if it’s the best out there or not. But it’s out there! And he’s making a lot of money!

So this is what I call the Wyland Principle: live your passion, get others to believe in it, and sell the crap out of it. Does that sound too capitalistic? Maybe. Maybe not.

Let’s explore this further.

Wyland is happy because he’s selling art and doing what he loves. The collectors are happy because they’re getting a piece of art that they feel enhances their lives. It’s a win for everyone right? The only people not happy are the critics. Who cares! Besides, is there such a thing as a happy critic?

So I tip my hat to Wyland and thank him for instilling in me some important life lessons.

What is one way you can apply the Wyland Principle in your life? What is something you’ve always wanted to do and maybe you can make money with it?

Why Job Security Is An Oxymoron

Have you ever heard the term At Will Employment? Most likely you have.

In fact, most people who’ve ever signed on with a new job have read those words in their contract. Basically it means that an employer has the right to dismiss you with or without cause whenever they like.

This “At Will Employment” isn’t just limited to hourly jobs either. It goes all the way up the food chain, CEO’s & Senior VP’s included. So my question is, with such a clause built into every persons working situation, does that really seem like true job security?

It doesn’t seem like it to me!

You Are In Charge Of Your Own Security

There is so much talk these days about the concept of Job Security. Government officials are busy trying to assure the public that they will help create happy, safe, secure jobs for years to come.

But there’s a problem with this. By relying on the anyone else to provide for you, you’re not providing for yourself. You’re getting a fish but you’re never learning how to fish.

If you’re reading this article, then chances are you have a desire within you to become something bigger. You’re not content with hand-outs. You also know that only you can provide the kind of security you’re looking for.

Why Job Security Can Never Be A Reality

The concept of having a nice, safe, secure job will always be just a dream. Governments, unions, & associations, try as they might, will never be able to provide a job for people that will last indefinitely.

That may have been true 40 years ago. But the fact is that the world is now changing too fast. Changes in technology and growth in up and coming countries like India and China are changing the global economic scene.

Those jobs where you worked steady hours with steady pay are now being written into the history books.

The simple fact is this: Job security can never be a reality because it assumes that security is something that can be created on the outside; that it’s something external.

Real security is something that comes from the inside. Real security comes from your own efforts. Real security comes from your own resourcefulness. Real security comes from your own industry and taking control of your life. It’s about taking responsibility for yourself.

At Will Income

Have you ever heard the phrase “At Will Income”? Well it’s basically the opposite of At Will Employment. It means that instead of waiting for your weekly paycheck from your boss, you determine how much money you’ll make and when and then what you get to do with it.

Entrepreneurs live by this code. Entrepreneurs don’t wait for someone to give them a handout. They go and get it for themselves.

The Choice Is Yours

Whether you want to work on the mercy of an employer or create your own income is up to you. You need money to make it – you need food on the table and a roof over your head. That’s obvious. But how you make that money is up to you.

The choice is yours.
