You either Do or you dont

You Either Do It or You Don’t

This morning I had breakfast with my good friend Carlos. Although Carlos lives in Cozumel, he’s currently working aboard a cruise ship making some big bucks.

He’s gone for weeks at a time over a 6 month stint with a month off in between.

He actually laid out for me how much he’s making and that if he sticks with his plan, in 2 years he’ll have enough money saved to buy a house with cash as well as to start his own business here on the island.

What he’s doing reminds me of one of my favorite quotes:

“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t”

I know Carlos and I know he’ll make it. And it’s awesome to see.

What about you?

If you’re reading this, chances are good that you’re looking for something more. More money, more free time, more freedom… more.

But this is a chance for you to do some introspection.

Before you can achieve something cool, you have to know a bit about yourself.

What Category are You?

In the last 4 months, I’ve visited 7 countries – U.S.A., Spain, Portugal, England, Ireland, France, & back home here to Mexico.

It’s exposed me to various lifestyles, political systems, economic models, and more. It’s made me think A LOT about the people who make it. And I mean, the people who have a dream and then make it a reality.

I feel like people fall into 3 categories:

1 – those who chase after their dream lifestyle and make it happen

2 – those who want the dream lifestyle but don’t make it happen

3 – those who think the dream lifestyle is only available to other people or “just in the movies” or “only in America”

As you read the list, what category do you think you fall in?

Be honest!

If you’re in the 3rd category, I can’t help you. For whatever reason you believe that you can’t live a dream lifestyle. To be honest, this blog probably is not for you.

If you’re in the 1st category, awesome! This blog may help you on your way or if you’ve already “arrived”, it will just reinforce your beliefs and the actions you took to make it.

My message today is for you in the 2nd category. The dreamers. The procrastinators. The “talk the talkers but don’t walk the walkers”. Yes, it’s for you, you lazy bums!

But never fear, here are 3 key principles that will help you.

1. You’ve Got to Sacrifice

Have you ever sacrificed something?

Maybe you sacrificed 4 years of your life in your early 20’s to get a college degree? Maybe you sacrifice sleeping in to get in an hour at the gym? Maybe you sacrifice going out to eat to save up for a trip to Europe?

Are you starting to see the theme there?

Sacrificing something usually means giving up something you think is good in order to get something better.

So in reality, you’re not really losing anything but gaining.

When it comes to your dream lifestyle and how to get there, what are you willing to sacrifice now? TV? Some sleep? Your weekends?

Re-read that quote:

“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t”

In other words, you’re going to do something now that most people won’t in order to live like the 1% (or whatever you want to call it).

In high school, my buddies used to make fun of a guy we knew that hauled hay back and forth over the weekends. Little did we know he was making big bucks.

He always just laughed off our teasing but one day he said, “you want to know why I do this? It’s so that I’ll be able to retire 30 years before any of you!”

He understood sacrifice.

In our case, my wife and I sold everything we owned and moved to start our business. We became minimalists so that nothing, including stuff, could keep us away from our dream of “living on a tropical island”. Obviously, we made it happen.

People who live their dream lifestyles are willing to sacrifice.

2. Fear Being Average

I want you to squirm a little bit right now.

I want you to think about lying on your deathbed and looking back at your life with regret. I want you to think about all the things you wanted to do but didn’t. I want you to think about that trip you always wanted to take or that dream house you always wanted to buy with cash.

If you have any dreams and you’re not actively working towards them, you’re just a boring, average human.

Oh snap! I know, harsh.

But don’t you want more than just a mundane life though?! If you’ve read along so far, I think you do.

If you’re the kind of person who’s cool with average, I probably offended you already. If you could “unlike” this site, you probably already did.

However, if you know you’re worthy of a more fantastic lifestyle, then hopefully I’ve inspired you.

“No way I am here just to pay bills for 75 years and then die!”

Since many of us are motivated by fear, I want you to think about living an unfulfilled life. Really let it seep into your pores. Then I want it to scare the heck out of you!

I want it to take a hold of you and drive you. Once you do that, you’re ready for the next step which is…

3. Take Immediate Action

This is pretty straight-forward.

What do you want? What’s the first step to getting there? Do that. Period. Then do the next thing. Then the next. Don’t look up until you’ve arrived.

I know what you’re about to say.

“Sean, for starters, I want to have more money”.

“Great!” I say. “Start a business! Don’t stop until you’re making as much money as you want!”

“But it’s not that easy…”

“Yes, it is,” I interrupt. “I know because I did it”.

Look at your big goal and then work backwards from there. Break it down to everything you need to do to make it happen. If you don’t know, look it up! Everything you need to know is already available online.

Then you need to get busy actually DOING it all.

Write up a to-do list. Put a goal achieving app on your phone. Get an accountability partner. Do whatever works for you.

Just do it.

And this leads me to the absolute truth which is…

You’re Either Going to Do It or You Aren’t

It’s that simple.

Lots of people talk the talk. Few walk the walk. It’s life.

I’m not sure about you, but I think that this life is too dang cool to waste rotting in a cubicle or at some lame job.

When I used to sit in that cubicle, my heart ached for something better. And I finally stopped talking about it and actually DID something.

If I ever get the chance to speak with you, I’ll know within about 2 minutes whether or not you’re going to make it. You know how? I’ll ask you what you’re willing to give up. I’ll also ask you about your goals and what you’re doing to make them a reality. Your answers will tell me all I need to know.

Those who do, do. Everyone else lives a sad, frustrated life.

The question is, are you the kind of person that is going to DO something? Or will you forever just WANT to do something?

It’s. Totally. Up. To. You.
